Google Chrome Frame to power Internet Explorer

Google recently introduced Google Chrome Frame, an early-stage plugin for Internet Explorer which allows rendering through the Chrome engine.
This will allow web developers to code using cutting-edge technologies AND to save (much) time spent finding Internet Explorer workarounds, when such exist.

Only websites having the following meta tag will render through the Chrome engine, that way other websites “won’t break” as they say.
<meta http-equiv="X-UA-Compatible" content="chrome=1" />

Collaboration part 1: Backpack pages and tags

Working with a team requires some organisation. This is the first of a series of blogposts on the way get2future collaborates on projects with clients.

Backpack

Backpack is a web-based collaboration tool developed by the team at 37Signals. It helps us gather and share information on various topics, including design, code and projects. When working on projects that require client input, we use Basecamp. This tool will be covered in a future blogpost. Backpack is used for all the small bits and pieces that we need to share with each other: Photoshop templates, design inspiration, jQuery snippets, … are all shared within the team on backpack’s pages.

What’s a page?

A page is a blank canvas that let’s you organize any type of information. To-do lists, notes, files and images can be added to a page so everyone can use them. This is what a blank Backpack page looks like :

Notes about BetaGroup #9 conference

Yesterday I went with Chris to the 9th BetaGroup conference at ULB, where Belgian startups are allowed to present their projects. Here is a summary of the 5  presentations we saw :

MonAssoc : http://monassoc.com/
Monassoc offers to create ready-to-use webpages dedicated to your association, club, group, giving your members a place to discuss, share, and get information. It’s kinda like a Facebook group or page, only with more options. You have a forum, a blog and a calendar to manage your events. It also has the “more serious” touch, missing in Facebook. No need to be an internet genius to get your association website, 3 steps, and you’re done ! After that, you can manage tabs, pages, photo albums, events. No backend CMS, everything is editable in-line.

Microsoft Tag: the High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB)

Microsoft Tag: the High Capacity Color Barcode (HCCB)

Announced at CES 2009, Microsoft released in early 2009 its beta of Microsoft Tag, a new barcode technology developed in-house by Microsoft Research.

Unlike other 2D barcodes, Microsoft Tag can be read easily: from a side angle, out-of-focused (blurry), behind a glass, etc.
The technology was created to be used by phone cameras, even the poor ones, on the go. Another thing: the tag is twice as small as other 2D barcodes (QRCode, Datamatrix).

Want to cut the costs of your hosting solutions? GO… Evolutive!

In these days of recession, you’re probably willing to cut some costs in your business, like your hosting costs for instance.  Let’s take a look at GoEvolutive hosting solutions. Why are they different and what do they offer?

In most of hosting solutions, we’re talking about physical machines, real hardware, which can stop working anytime. In such case, you have two solutions:

  1. watch the clock and wait for the coolest technician to repair your server, while your website is down, losing potential clients
  2. go to the datacenter and do it yourself!

In both case: we hope you had your data backed-up!
With a GoEvo server, you have a 99,99% SLA on hardware plus a full back-up every day out of the box, no skills required.

Girly Geeky Shopping in London mobile application : Total success !

It’s a total success for this new mobile application we developed in collaboration with Cleverwood and Rolling Talks for Eurostar. More than 700 messages were posted by the Girls Geeks during their shopping trip to London on Saturday the 14th of March 2009 !

Twitscoop’s tagcloud remembers it too,  the girls put it on fire with no less than 668 tweets, buzzing the event all day long.

This event is now on lots of blogs, with only but positive reactions. This is what we call a really good buzz.

Wanna see some pictures of this great day? There you go!

Girly Geeky Shopping in London

Tomorrow, Saturday the 14th of March 2009, about 80 French and Belgian Girl Geeks are going to London, thanks to Eurostar, for shopping!
They will use a brand new social media application which is a mash-up between Google Maps, Flickr and Twitter.

This will enable them to share tips between them (message + picture) but also to see where the message has been posted from.

We are very excited at G2F that we could work together with Cleverwood and Rolling Talks on this great project for Eurostar.

We can’t wait for Saturday to watch the application working on the special shopping-day, with 80 girls tweeting around, in London!

The Girl Geeks will be using the private mobile web application but everyone will be able to “see” them chatting in realtime through the web application and Twitter #GGSL tag.

Some notes from the BetaGroup #8 conference

Some notes from the BetaGroup #8 conference

Tonight I went with three of my colleagues to this quarter’s BetaGroup conference, which has put forward some very nice web application ideas. Here’s what I highlighted :

Extrafoot – Public Beta on www.extrafoot.be or www.extravoetbal.be
Social football website which is based mainly on the publication of fresh news from the Belgian football scene (with 3 full time journalists currently gathering information in Belgium) and social commenting from the users. With 3.000 to 10.000 daily visits and 3000+ members, it is becoming a strong belgian football community.
The nice approach resides in the fact that the user wins credits each time a comment is posted. These credits can be spent on gifts (city trips, gifts from clubs and players, …). I look forward to see how the introducing of social commenting rewards will boost commenting without being drowned in SPAM.
